Laser Materials Processing for Manufacturing
Dr. Bo Gu from BOS Photonics will moderate this wide-ranging session on new techniques in laser materials processing. Scientists from NASA, Lawrence Livermore National Labs, and MKS Instruments will give a tour of the latest laser engineering for precision additive and ablative materials processing in glass and metals. These talks will be followed by an overview of ultrafast applications and markets from Coherent's Dr. Norman Hodgson.

"Metal Additive Manufacturing to Enable Spaceflight"
Paul Gradl
NASA has been involved in the development and maturation of metal additive manufacturing (AM) for spaceflight since the late 2000’s. This presentation will highlight some of the developments in understanding AM processes through material characterization and testing, standards development, and component fabrication to advance the technology for current and future spaceflight missions.

"Metal additive manufacturing using tailored laser beams"
Dr. Thej Tumkur
Presentation of our team’s efforts in using tailored spatial intensity profiles of the process laser beam, including Bessel beams, for improving control over melt pool dynamics, reducing porosity and achieving better mechanical and morphological properties in 3D printed metals.

"Simulation-based Laser Process Development for High Aspect Ratio Through Holes in Thin Glass Substrates"
Dr. Zhibin Lin
We demonstrate using a single laser source to provide a high-throughput and cost-effective solution for small through glass vias (TGVs) with straight, smooth sidewalls, minimal splash, and high uniformity with state-of-the-art multi-physical simulations.

“Ultrafast Laser Machining – Processes, Applications and Market”
Dr. Norman Hodgson
This presentation will provide an overview of the industrial ultrafast laser market, review the fundamentals of the laser-material interaction for ultrafast pulses and discuss the main industrial applications.
