WiO Spotlight Series - Representation Matters: Role Models and Allies
Join us for a monthly interview with women in the community to learn about their research and their advice to other women in the field. Hosted by 2020 Diversity Outreach Award recipient, Jess Wade, this series is part of our efforts to encourage and inspire women to bring their ideas to light.

It is easy to underestimate the importance of representation when surrounded by a support system of individuals who share salient aspects of our identity. This talk will shed light on the significance of role models and allies when otherwise isolated or removed from these obvious sources of support.

After Prof. Bell shares her research, she will:
• Honor role models and allies who helped to shape her career trajectory
• Share allyship “dos and don’ts” based on these experiences
• Discuss how and why we can all be role models and allies

Muyinatu Bell is the John C. Malone Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Computer Science at Johns Hopkins University, where she founded and directs the Photoacoustic & Ultrasonic Systems Engineering (PULSE) Lab. Dr. Bell and her pioneering research received multiple prestigious awards and honors, including MIT Technology Review’s Innovator Under 35 Award, the NSF CAREER Award, the NIH Trailblazer Award, Maryland’s Outstanding Young Engineer Award, the Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, and most recently the SPIE Early Career Achievement Award.

Stay after the one-hour webinar for 30 minutes of networking in breakout rooms!
